Examples of family traditions for schoolchildren and preschool children

What are family traditions?

Family determines a person's belonging to his family. Within each cell of society, certain foundations, customs and norms are formed. These are family traditions. Some claim that they do not have any generally accepted rituals, but the usual wish of good night before going to bed or the words “Good morning!” may be one of the varieties of family traditions.

Family rituals can be small or, conversely, very large-scale. In some close-knit and friendly families, they result in real holidays among relatives. So, for example, celebrating the New Year can turn into a meeting of all relatives, which occurs under certain circumstances once a year.

The role of family traditions in raising a child

It is necessary to raise a child in family traditions from an early age. There are a lot of advantages to this:

  • The feeling of a child being part of something whole and larger. This gives him a feeling of confidence and protection. In childhood, there is often a lack of support and support, which is why many problems of various types occur. Rituals and customs will involve the child in the family;

  • Knowledge and respect of a kind. Today, many people do not remember or do not know the roots of their families. The age of technology and scientific achievements has replaced personal meetings and communication with virtual communication through gadgets. In modern society, not every child can stay with their grandparents in the village. This is because the busyness and involvement of children in various clubs and sections has crowded out the simple joys of childhood. Therefore, it is very important to create family traditions and rituals, with the help of which it will be possible to become interested and learn more deeply about the history of your relatives;
  • Spending time together. Getting together in the evening over an old photo album of family photos is priceless and beneficial for the whole family. This simple activity unites and unites, tells the story of the family, and teaches children to listen. Sometimes it is very difficult to find time to spend with a child; such rituals will help you spend leisure time together and immerse yourself in family memories.

Long-standing traditions of the Russian family

The concept of “family” in the sense in which we use it now (that is, meaning wife, husband, children, and sometimes grandparents) appeared not so long ago. Previously, a family was considered a large branched community, consisting of older, middle, younger generations, with many “side branches”, relatives in husband and wife, that is, not blood.

Here, in this large community, the concept of “family traditions” was born, which is, in fact, the basis and support of the family, helping to survive and remain united at any time.

Since the times of Domostroy, it has been customary to believe that the husband is the head of the family, and as he says, so it will be. Yes, it really was like that. Russian family traditions and customs dictated that men, regardless of any events, remain courageous and strong, play the role of breadwinner and breadwinner, and bear responsibility for their family.

In Rus', it has always been customary to involve children early in work activities and teach them independence almost from birth. When the first-born was just starting to walk, holding tightly to the stove with his hands, another child was already appearing in the family, and all the parents’ attention was focused on him. A one-year-old child had to learn to be independent, to take care of himself, to learn to eat, drink, dress and go to bed on his own, since the mother was busy with the newborn baby, and the father was plowing in the field.

With the advent of the third child, the two-year-old child had to not only be independent, but also be an assistant to his parents around the house. They looked after their younger brothers and sisters, carried jugs of water into the house, and did housework.

Boys at the age of three helped their father chop wood and skillfully handled an ax. Now this is simply impossible to imagine. Modern kids, even if they try to help their parents, they do not provide real help; they do everything in a playful way. Today, real help can be expected from children at a more conscious school age.

But there are other family traditions in Russia that have not yet lost their relevance. Read about them in the following sections of the article.

What other national traditions were widespread in the family? For example, in pre-revolutionary Russia, among the nobility it was customary to spend evenings reading poetry or playing music, inviting poets and musicians to their home. The older generation started this tradition, the younger generation supported it, and so literary and musical circles flourished for decades. Thus, the circles of Elizaveta Khitrovo (daughter of Kutuzov) and Dolly Fikelmon (granddaughter of the great commander) were famous in the capital. The Pushkin family hosted poetry lovers and theater experts.

In peasant families, in the evenings, after all the day's work, the female part of the family gathered together, the women spun, sewed, and talked. Thus, home traditions held together the smallest, as it was customary to say (already in Soviet times), unit of society.

Are there such traditions in your family? Maybe your grandmother was an excellent knitter and passed the skill on to your mother, your mother passed it on to you, and you are teaching your little daughter? Or have you been keeping a photo album for a long time, starting with black and white photographs from which young gentlemen in sailor jackets and young ladies in fluffy dresses look seriously?

If you can't remember anything like that, don't be upset. Why not start some great family traditions now? Talk to your children and older relatives. If the elders remember something about the previous habits and customs of the family, it will be wonderful. If children come up with an idea, it will be great, because in this case they will implement it with enthusiasm.

Family traditions in Russia

Family traditions (examples for children can be varied: drinking tea, playing together) in Russia have their own national characteristics. They are aimed at knowledge and pride in the history of the Russian people and the Russian state.

  • Family tree. Compiling your family tree in the form of a tree with roots (ancestors) and branches (younger generation) is a good tradition of many Russian families. In some schools, this is a required summer assignment. To complicate the task, you can paste photos of your ancestors, paying tribute to each of them.

    Example of family traditions for children: family tree. This tradition will teach the child to respect and value his ancestry

  • Pass on family heirlooms from generation to generation. Usually this is a very expensive (or simply memorable) thing that has its own history: a box, a piece of jewelry, a vase, a silver spoon. Along with the relic, the legend or history of the acquisition of this item is also transmitted.
  • To name a born child in honor of some great or simply dear ancestor. As the child grows, parents tell him who he owes his name to. Thanks to this tradition, the names of the founders of the clans continue to be heard in the modern world.
  • Pass on a family craft or profession to new generations. Russia knows entire dynasties of confectioners, agronomists, musicians, and doctors. To continue the work of ancestors and parents is a matter of honor for many to this day.
  • Russian feast. Greeting guests at a wide table rich in all kinds of snacks and drinks is a native Russian and very ancient tradition. They still love to give treats. Many peoples are surprised by the quantity and variety of Russian dishes.

Several more popular Russian traditions are given in the table:

Name of traditionThe essence of traditionWhat does tradition say?
Children's holiday in the villageSummer holidays are spent with grandparents in nature. Picking berries, fishing and working in the garden introduce the child to the village way of life. Participation of the older generation in raising children, instilling respect for elders
Coloring eggs for EasterOn the eve of Easter, the whole family paints eggs in different colors and decorates them. The eggs are then distributed to friends and acquaintances. Tribute to national holidays
Going to the bathhouse before the New YearThe tradition is to celebrate the New Year clean. It is advisable to wash yourself and put on new clothes Belief of the Russian people in omens

How to create traditions in the family?

Start by assessing and analyzing your own family traditions. What do you do for every holiday? For each family member's birthday? Do you have some weekly traditions in your family, such as Sunday lunch or going for a walk before bed?

Make a list of your traditional annual, monthly, weekly tasks, maybe they are your family traditions.

It is best if you discuss all the ideas at a general family council and make a joint decision. By the way, why not make such meetings a tradition, say, on Friday evenings, when all family members gather over a cup of freshly brewed tea and a box of their favorite chocolates and tell each other about the past week, their achievements and victories, and share problems and plans for the future?

Or you can start a tradition of greeting Saturday morning with vigorous exercises, and everyone chooses the exercises that he likes best, everyone does them, and then the role of the leader passes to the next one, and so on, until everyone gets a charge of vivacity and fun for the whole weekend.

You can start interesting family traditions during the holidays. For example, how often do you go to the theater? Try to visit the theater with your whole family every year before the New Year holidays, choosing a fun, uplifting performance. By the way, this can be done on December 31, after all the salads have already been cut, and there is still plenty of time before the chimes strike.

An example is the famous Zhenya Lukashin, the hero of the film “The Irony of Fate...”. Remember? “Every year on December 31, my friends and I go to the bathhouse...” The man, by the way, eventually found his soul mate, and all thanks to tradition!

Or maybe you too – the whole family – should go to the sauna before the New Year? Everyone there will find something to their liking: the children will play billiards and splash around in the pool, you, your husband and parents will have a good steam bath and swim. You can give each other a massage.

Keep a calendar of traditions, let all important family dates, anniversaries and anniversaries be reflected there. In a special album or notebook, to which each member of the household will add something of their own, you can celebrate the family’s significant achievements and small deeds. Keeping this diary itself is already a tradition.

It would be nice to have at least one major family event every month that you and your baby can look forward to and prepare for. Most of these events will be your birthdays or holidays, and in those months when there is nothing like that, you can simply come up with something special with your child, discuss a way to celebrate or spend this day.

Some such events can be turned into rituals, that is, a certain sequence of events can be clearly defined. Do this once, and the child will quickly remember it and look forward to the event every time.

Involving yourself in family events will give you and your child comfort, safety and a sense of community.

Not only going to the theater, but also visiting exhibitions or trips to the country can be traditional. It is important that they are repeated regularly and that everyone in your family enjoys them. Such a vacation will not only strengthen family ties and allow you to experience unforgettable moments, but will also contribute to the spiritual development of children, broaden their horizons and intelligence.

A great tradition can be weekend walks, forays into nature, skating or skiing, mushroom picking, one-day trips to a neighboring city and leisurely walks along its streets. While children are small, they will enthusiastically embrace such trips.

It is necessary that they retain pleasant, joyful feelings from these joint ventures, then they will not only subsequently offer them to you themselves, but also start them in their families, and so, you see, the tradition will live on, holding the family together. After all, family is our support in difficult times, it saves us from loneliness and prevents us from dying. Without a family, a person is like a lonely tree on a hillock, exposed to all the winds and storms of life. Any grief is much easier to overcome together.

The task of holding together and preserving a family most often falls on the shoulders of a woman, so let’s help ourselves: let’s create good, interesting traditions that will help all family members feel a sense of community, continuity, and strengthen trust and friendship. Tonight, gather your family and come up with something interesting together. Good luck with your ideas - and they will definitely appear, don’t doubt it!

Family traditions in different countries

Each country is unique and full of its own characteristics and traditions.

Here are the most interesting of them:

  • In France, all children are taught to wait from childhood. This skill is as important as the ability to use a spoon or hygiene items. The French believe that the ability to wait will develop willpower and character in a child;

  • Israel is a country of calm morals and silence. This also manifests itself in relation to raising children: here you cannot shout at them, scold them or raise your voice. If the child has done something wrong, they will calmly tell him that “such a good and wonderful kid should not behave like that.” All children are the center of parental care and attention;
  • In Scotland, there is an interesting family custom: a small child is given a coin in his hand. If he abandons it, he will spend money thoughtlessly; if he clenches it in his fist, he is destined to become thrifty and thrifty, able to handle money;
  • Germans are famous for their reserved emotions and lack of ability to express their feelings vividly and passionately. This cannot but affect the upbringing of children. They give birth to a child in Germany only after they have acquired their own housing and sufficient material wealth. Children are prohibited from touching things in the house and disturbing the order. In the nursery they are free to create everything to their liking, but without going beyond its boundaries. Grandparents in Germany do not participate in upbringing; children remain with a nanny when parents go to work. From childhood, they are taught the main family traditions: getting up early, working hard, saving on everything;
  • residents of Wales and Ireland instill love for their homeland, national language and customs. At school, children are taught in their native language, and the program includes lessons on patriotism.

How to create daily traditions for preschool and elementary school children

Family traditions (parents should set examples for children) need to begin to be instilled in childhood, so that the child perceives them as part of life. Each family can come up with and create its own individual ritual, understandable and dear only to its members. You can also choose from a large number of already established family traditions that are passed down from generation to generation in many Russian families.

"Secret Handshake"

There are situations when a child is anxious, worried and does not feel confident enough. This could be before any public performance, during the period of adaptation to kindergarten, or when meeting something new for the first time. The situation gets worse when you need to take a bold step yourself by letting go of your mother.

Psychologists advise getting out of the situation in a playful way: creating your own tradition of a secret handshake. When saying goodbye to your child, you need to devote time to this gesture, which will instill confidence in the child and give him strength to overcome his task. You can simply stand silently, holding hands, or come up with your own small movements with your hands or fingers, claps, fist bumps.

"Let's eat together"

Many parents suffer from the problem of not being able to feed their children. The child refuses the offered dish, asks for sweets, eats very little and selectively. You can instill a culture of nutrition by creating a family tradition - sitting down at the table and eating with the whole family.

Forcing or force-feeding is not a solution. It is necessary to show by example how important it is to eat on time and correctly. All family members at one table full of balanced and nutritious dishes should arouse the child's food interest.

The tradition can be supplemented with pleasant attributes: lighting candles before dinner, cooking cocoa together before breakfast.

"Family Hug"

Tactile sensations play a huge role in the life and development of a child. The touches of loved ones have a calming effect. Starting a tradition of family hugs is a great idea. You can discuss the ritual itself.

For example, no matter what happens, cuddle before bed. Then all quarrels and misunderstandings will fade into the background, and there will be no opportunity to continue cold communication.

A family hug can also be a good ritual before parting or when meeting.

"Bedtime Story"

One of the most beloved traditions for children is listening to a bedtime story. The night light comes on, mom or dad sits down next to you, and an interesting magical story begins. This ritual has been known since ancient times, when parents sang lullabies to their children while holding them in their arms.

The soothing voice of the mother calms the child and sets him up for rest and peace. By introducing this tradition, you don’t have to worry about your child not wanting to go to bed.

"An evening walk"

Modern children are influenced by television programs and are highly dependent on gadgets and all kinds of devices. This negatively affects the vision and general psycho-emotional state of the child. There is absolutely no time left for live communication and simple games.

The way out of this situation is not easy, because the habit of spending time in front of the screen is difficult to eradicate. It is necessary to interest the child. This can be done by regular daily evening walks with the whole family.

Fresh air and spending time together can be varied:

  • going to the park;
  • a walk to the nearest lake or river;
  • cycling;
  • downhill or ice skating in winter.

"Cooperative Games"

Play is an important part of any child’s life. Through it, he plays out different life situations: learns to be part of the whole and confront one on one, learns the joy of victory and the bitterness of defeat, creates and resolves conflicts.

It would be great if every parent made it a habit to play with their own child for at least some time every day. This joint activity will strengthen the bond between the older and younger generations.

Games can be completely different: board games, team games, logic games. It is important to choose exactly what interests the child. In the summer, you can organize an outdoor game. In winter - in a cozy and warm house. The main rule is not to ignore children's requests to play with them.

"Household duties"

Family traditions (examples for children: wet cleaning, washing dishes) can also be educational in nature. Introducing household chores divided among family members is a good way to teach your child responsibility and work. It is important to show by example how important cleanliness in the house is.

You can start small: instruct your child to wipe the dust and collect his toys. A good way is to do Sunday cleaning together. At the same time, as the child grows up, you can entrust him with more and more important tasks. However, it should be remembered that it is strictly prohibited to allow children of any age to participate in dangerous activities, such as washing windows or ceilings.

Connecting two families and their traditions

When a new family is formed, the family traditions of two different clans are combined into one single whole.

Each of them has different ideas in matters of raising children, family holidays, gifts, their own attitudes towards the financial component, health, healthy lifestyle, sports, nutrition, religion and so on. When starting a family, the future husband and wife must agree in advance on all the above-mentioned issues, even before entering into legal marriage, otherwise disagreements cannot be avoided.

With the birth of a child, everything changes in the family; there is no time for walks under the moon and long evening conversations. For example, in my father’s family it was customary for the whole family to engage in sports, skiing and skating in the winter, and swimming and active outdoor sports in the summer. In the mother’s family there could be other traditions, for example, it was customary to visit exhibitions and museums, become spiritually enlightened, study art and world culture.

How to combine such different traditions of families into one whole?

A tiny child, as soon as he is born, begins to get used to home, to family. And it is so important now to show the baby family unity and cohesion. In order for there to be harmony in the family, you need to consult and discuss pressing problems while sitting at the family table.

The newlyweds at the wedding are wished “Advice and Love”; advice is the union of two loving people. In a family, it shouldn’t be like everyone is on their own. Family is a strength where everyone should be a mountain for each other. Just as it is impossible to break the rods tied together, it is also impossible to break a strong family. And it’s easy to break one twig at a time. If everyone in the family has only their own opinion and does not take into account the interests of other family members, such a family will never be able to become strong and invincible.

Weekly Traditions

Pleasant traditions, organized on certain days of the week, will create a sense of anticipation in the child. Going to grandma's house on Saturday or having a holiday dinner on Sunday can serve as an incentive to behave well during the week.

You can remind them what exactly awaits the child on the weekend or another specific day. Older children keep track of the days themselves, crossing them off on the calendar, in anticipation of the cherished ritual.

"Sunday Breakfast"

Family weekends will delight any child. These days you can sleep longer, there is no reason to rush anywhere. And of course, a fragrant breakfast awaits in the kitchen, which will bring the whole family together at the table. A tradition for children can also be a certain favorite dish that mom cooks on Sundays. An example would be pancakes or apple pie.

The ideal option would be to combine several traditions: have breakfast at home and go for a family walk in the park. Such weekends will be a bonus for the child’s fruitful week.

"Shopping Trip"

All children love to go shopping. Especially if there are departments with toys and children's products. Therefore, you can create another pleasant ritual for your child by taking him with you to the supermarket.

When going grocery shopping, you need to warn your child that this is not just a walk, you need to buy everything on the list. This can develop responsibility and thriftiness in him. Modern supermarkets have special children's carts that the child himself can pull.

They look like regular ones for adults, only in a smaller form. This attribute will definitely arouse interest in the process. Patience can be rewarded by buying something nice from the children's department.

"Football Day"

For boys, playing football with dad on certain days will be a relevant and favorite tradition. If there are no weather conditions, you can sit in front of the TV and watch your favorite team play.

It will be great to take real fan attributes: whistles, scarves, hats with emblems. The main thing is to do everything related to this sport on this day. Getting tickets to a live match will be a real surprise.

This is a wonderful ritual for introducing a child to sports. It's also a great way for fathers and sons to spend quality time together.

Other family values and traditions

Family traditions (examples for children that are original and rare can be searched on the Internet) can and should be created by ourselves within the family. It would be great if there were rituals that only the child and his parent would know about. Children love everything mysterious and magical, so this will be a real adventure for them.

"Family photo album"

Creating your own family photo archive together with your child will not only be interesting, but also useful. To do this, you can buy a large format album where photos will be placed in chronological order.

If the child is too young to do gluing, he can be entrusted with decorating the pages. Each photo can be interestingly signed and the time and place of the photo taken can be indicated. Over time, the album will be replenished, and looking at it in the evening by the fireplace will become its own separate tradition.

It is also possible to create such an album in virtual space using various programs. This is suitable for those children who love and understand computers.

"Little Holidays"

Organizing small parties for children on various occasions will be interesting for both parents and children. You can start a tradition after a certain success of a child to celebrate this event. This could be a good grade at school, or a won sports event or Olympics.

The holiday may contain special attributes: decoration of the children's room, congratulations and a delicious cake or pie. But a small holiday will also be a visit to a cozy cafe with a cup of warm tea and homemade cookies.

However, there is no need to turn every positive step of a child into a source of pride and admiration, because once he loses, he may experience disappointment or even despair.

"Together Outside the Home"

Going out with your child to some cultural or sports institution will have a positive effect on his development and broadening his horizons. You need to choose one day of the week and devote it to this ritual.

You can visit the following places:

  • children's theaters;
  • circus;

  • playrooms and spaces;
  • museums;
  • classical music concerts;
  • art exhibitions;
  • children's cinemas;
  • sports playgrounds;
  • children's quests;

For example:

  • Creating a holiday menu. The child can offer a recipe for a dish or drink.
  • Purchasing groceries at the supermarket. It will be great to go shopping together so that your child helps choose products.
  • Cleaning of the apartment. Some small tasks can be completed by the child independently. For example, tidy up your room and wipe off the dust.
  • Home decoration. The most interesting part for children is the real creative time. They can draw pictures, patterns, sculpt figures and cut out garlands. The child can be entirely responsible for this item, relying on his fantasy and imagination.
  • Preparing holiday dishes. Involving your child in cooking together is very useful. This is especially true for girls. Of course, at first you shouldn’t expect the dishes to be neat and refined. Here, spending time together and having an interesting leisure option are more important.

  • Making and wrapping gifts. Making handicrafts with your child and giving them to your family later is one of the best ideas. If you still prefer purchased gifts, you can show creativity by packaging them. The child will be able to easily cope with this task.
  • Preparing holiday outfits . If New Year or a child's birthday is expected, it will be great to decorate the child's dress or suit with various ribbons, tinsel, rhinestones or feathers. Children love everything bright and shiny. And having a hand in creating a fashionable look is every girl’s dream.

There are many more different examples of how spending time together can be turned into a good family tradition. It is very important for children to feel part of the whole, so rituals with parents will have a positive effect on their growth and development.
