We will begin our acquaintance with the human body with the cell. Cells are a kind of “building blocks” that make up living and plant organisms. There are organisms that consist of just one cell, for example bacteria. Cells can be different - animal or plant, nervous or muscle, etc., but despite the differences, the structure of all cells is similar.

All cells have a shell - a cell membrane, cytoplasm (semi-liquid cellular environment) and a nucleus.

The cell membrane not only limits the cell from the external environment, ensuring its integrity, but also regulates the exchange between the cell and the environment, passing certain substances into and out of the cell through the pores in it. Please note - certain! The permeability of the cell membrane is selective. Some substances pass through it, while others do not. Thus, we can say that in addition to the structural (mechanical) function of separating the cell from the external environment, the membrane also performs transport and barrier functions. In general, cell membranes have more functions, but for the purposes of our course it is enough to know these three.

The semi-fluid cytoplasm contains essential cellular components called "organelles" as well as non-permanent components called "inclusions". Let's get to know them better.

The main essential component of any cell is the cell nucleus, which stores information about the cell necessary for the formation of new cells through division. The cell nucleus can have different shapes - from spherical to spindle-shaped. The nucleus ensures heredity, in other words, it is responsible for ensuring that daughter cells are similar to their parents. Information is stored in chromosomes, formed from deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) molecules and various proteins. Chromosomes look like long thin threads that are distributed throughout the entire volume of the nucleus. The nuclei of somatic (or non-reproductive) cells of the body in all organisms belonging to the same biological species contain the same number of chromosomes, which is called the “chromosome set”. Similar chromosomes are grouped in pairs. Human somatic cells have 46 chromosomes or 23 pairs. But the nuclei of germ cells contain half as many chromosomes as somatic cells - one of each pair. Coming together, two sex cells (male and female) form one cell with a full set of chromosomes. From this cell a new organism develops. Since half of the child's chromosomes come from the father and half from the mother, the child resembles both the father and the mother at the same time. We'll talk more about cell division later.

The nucleus is separated from the cytoplasm by a nuclear envelope, consisting of two membranes separated by a gap. They, like the cell membrane, have pores through which the exchange of substances occurs between the nucleus and the cytoplasm. The nucleus has its own “cytoplasm”, which is called “nucleoplasm” or “karyoplasm”. Unlike the cytoplasm, which is based on water, karyoplasm is a colloidal solution of proteins and therefore has high density and viscosity.

In addition to chromosomes, the cell nucleus contains so-called “nucleoli” - formations that do not have their own membrane. There can be from 1 to 7. Nucleoli consist of protein molecules and ribonucleic acid (RNA). Organelles called “ribosomes” are synthesized in the nucleoli.

Ribosomes are spherical formations that do not have their own membrane. Ribosomes perform a very important function of synthesizing proteins from amino acids, and they do this not anyhow, but according to the information recorded in the matrix - the RNA molecule.

So, the cell nucleus stores the information necessary for the reproduction of new cells and, together with ribosomes, provides this process with “building materials” - proteins.

What other organelles are found in the cytoplasm?

Mitochondria are a kind of energy station of the cell. Typically, a cell contains about 2 thousand mitochondria, the total volume of which is up to a quarter of the total volume of the cell. Mitochondria have a spherical or ellipsoidal shape. Mitochondria have two membranes - a smooth outer one and a folded inner one, which forms many transverse partitions called “cristae”.

Organic substances that enter the cell from the outside are subject to oxidation in the mitochondria. This produces molecules of a substance called “adenosine triphosphate” (abbreviated as ATP). ATP molecules are like batteries that store energy. When the body needs energy, they break down and release it.

The Golgi apparatus, named after the Italian scientist Camillo Golgi, who discovered it in 1898, is a “sorting center” - a system of membrane structures, cisterns and vesicles in which substances synthesized inside the cell accumulate. Substances are sorted, some of them change, the necessary ones remain, and the unnecessary ones are removed outside the cell.

In addition, the Golgi apparatus synthesizes lysosomes, membrane-bound organelles similar to vesicles that contain many enzymes. Enzymes decompose the molecules of complex organic substances into simpler ones, in other words, lysosomes are engaged in the “digestion” of complex substances.

Two centrioles located at right angles to each other and forming the so-called “cellular center” are a cylindrical formation consisting of nine bundles of microscopic tubes. Centrioles are involved in cell division.

The cell has its own transport system - the endoplasmic reticulum or endoplasmic reticulum, which is a complex network of channels and cavities. The volume of this network averages from 30 to 50% of the cellular volume. On the outer surface of the endoplasmic reticulum there are ribosomes, which, as we already know, synthesize protein.

The simplest organelles in structure are vacuoles - membrane-bounded vesicles filled with gas or liquid. In animal cells, vacuoles occupy no more than 5% of the total cell volume, and in plant cells they can occupy up to 90%. If in plant cells there is most often one large vacuole located in the center, then in animal cells we can see several small vacuoles that are located on the periphery. Vacuoles perform various functions - like lysosomes, they decompose complex molecules into simple ones, participate in the removal of substances outside the cell, accumulate necessary substances, etc.

Take a piece of paper and a pen or pencil and try to draw a cell with all its contents without the help of a textbook. Do not try to achieve complete resemblance to the drawings given in the book.
